ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

The Edward Showler Foundation has been set up in memory of Doctor Ed Showler, who died on the 11th June 2017

Ed was a gifted young doctor with an amazing career ahead of him.  He had just started his specialist training in Haematology at the Royal Free Hospital in London when at the age of 27 years he was diagnosed with metastatic Clear Cell Sarcoma.  There is no effective treatment for this disease and Ed knew this. He lived 8 months from his diagnosis to his death.

Sarcomas are a rare type of cancer that arises in connective tissue. Because of their rarity, research into sarcoma is relatively poorly funded so as a consequence less is known about the disease and the treatments for it are often very poor. Initially we are seeking to raise £1,000,000 to fund a programme of work, most of which will be spent on research.

Before his diagnosis Ed had worked as a doctor in the Sarcoma Unit at University College Hospital London and saw at first hand the effects of this pernicious disease. Learn more about Ed >>

OUR AIMS

WE AIM to raise funds to achieve the following …

  • Fund research into the causes and treatment of Sarcoma and specifically Clear Cell Sarcoma with guidance from CRUK and Sarcoma UK and other medical experts in the field.

  • Fund Memory Days for seriously ill young adults. Following Ed’s diagnosis he was able to enjoy time making memories. We want to help others in a similar position to do the same.

  • To increase the awareness of Sarcoma and to improve doctor patient communication. Ed was passionate about good doctor patient communications and we are working with Cambridge University on ways we can improve these skills.

Ed thought that life was a wonderful gift and wanted his life to make a difference. Sadly he has been robbed of the opportunity to achieve what he had set out to do but with your help we can make that difference for him.
